Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive.

At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place.

Come join us at Xero! We are looking for an Engineer to join our Platform-as-a Service SQL team, part of the wider Technology team based in New Zealand.

About the team!

You’ll be a key part of the Platform-as-a-Service SQL team, a cross-functional agile infrastructure development team. Our goal is to create a data platform to provide Xero product teams with highly available SQL databases in a consistent and automated fashion. You will build on the technical capabilities of the team to provision, own and maintain the production SQL infrastructure, troubleshoot performance issues, build ancillary tooling, automation and resolve production incidents.

What you’ll do:

  • Be customer-focused and directly engage with our PaaS customers;  identify customer pain points and solve real customer problems based on observing their struggles and analysing customer data.
  • Develop continuous delivery pipelines and software tools to automate cloud-based solutions
  • Build and maintain a centralised SQL Server platform and ancillary tools to enable Xero’s development teams
  • Automate and support infrastructure provisioned in AWS with infrastructure-as-code solutions
  • Continuously improve processes and solutions to be scalable and highly available
  • Implement detection and alerting of anomalous behaviours
  • Master several technical areas while maintaining a broad understanding of the current industry landscape. Ensure technical decisions are made with your team in alignment with Xero’s engineering practice.
  • Work proactively with your manager on your personal and career development, highlighting any training/development needs.
  • You will join the teams on call rotation and use analytical and problem solving skills to resolve incidents

What you’ll bring with you:

  • An understanding of relational database systems and concepts (SQL Server preferred PostgreSQL as a bonus but practical experience not necessary)
  • Hands-on experience automating infrastructure in a cloud environment, preferably AWS (SSM, EC2, S3, ECS etc)
  • Experience with cloud platforms and tooling (preferably AWS)
  • Familiarity with agile software development methodology and tooling, including continuous integration and delivery
  • Practical experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform, Cloudformation, etc.)
  • Experience administering Windows servers in a highly available environment is preferred but not necessary
  • Familiarity with source control systems (git is preferred)
  • Practical experience with scripting (Powershell, Python is preferred)
  • Familiarity with common networking architectures
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and analytical abilities
  • A desire to use new and exciting technologies to automate away toil and speed up delivery for teams across Xero

Bonus points if you have:

  • Knowledge of NoSQL database technologies
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Chef, Puppet, SaltStack, Ansible, Powershell DSC, etc.)

If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to advise us at time of application and throughout the interview process.
