MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

Join the Evergreen Team

The Developer Productivity Team empowers engineers at MongoDB through our automated build, test, and release systems for all MongoDB products. This role is focused on Evergreen, our continuous integration system, which runs 300 million tests across 400 thousand hosts per day. We’re looking for an engineer who cares deeply about scaling distributed systems, optimizing database performance, ensuring ongoing reliability, and improving software engineering for those around them. This is a primarily back-end role, working with Go, Kubernetes, AWS, and MongoDB.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in New York City for our hybrid working model.

The right candidate for this role will

  • Be proficient in a statically typed, compiled language (we primarily use Go)
  • Have solid computer science fundamentals, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture
  • Have a track record of shipping systems in a Cloud environment, with proficiency in Kubernetes
  • Have familiarity with managing cloud compute resources, such as virtual machines (ideally AWS EC2)
  • Have familiarity with working with databases (ideally managing a noSQL database)
  • Have familiarity with identifying performance and reliability bottlenecks in an existing software system, as well as identifying solutions and reliable measurements for future monitoring
  • Be a helpful and thoughtful communicator with other engineers and stakeholders

Positive Expectations

  • Scale our continuous integration ecosystem as it supports the needs of a growing engineering organization
  • Support project owners and R&D Productivity teams by introducing functionality and simplifying existing functionality to streamline the testing process
  • Propose well-reasoned features and solutions by incorporating user feedback, metrics, and company and department objectives.
  • Incorporate AI tooling to improve support and developer experience

Success Measures

  • In three months, you’ll have understood the high-level architecture of Evergreen and made contributions to the performance and reliability of our systems as well as features impacting our customers. You will be able to answer questions concerning the performance and operations of systems you have most actively worked on. You will be in discussions about next steps for larger projects to carry out.
  • In six months, you will have led or been a major contributor on one or more substantial projects. You will be subject matter expert across most of our systems, able to understand how they are and are not interdependent, and will be able to answer questions about how they perform and operate. You will have also identified smaller architectural and operational improvements, especially by using your perspective and experience from outside MongoDB.
  • In twelve months, You will regularly be initiating and leading technical projects and operational changes that have a substantial impact on our ability to deliver a smooth debugging and testing experience for the developers that use our products at MongoDB. You will be a strong technical resource across all of our systems as well as adjoining systems, and will be able to provide guidance about technical and operational direction across both. You will be responsible for mentoring newer and more junior members of the team, especially around concepts related to scaling and reliability.

To drive the personal growth and business impact of our employees, we’re committed to developing a supportive and enriching culture for everyone. From employee affinity groups, to fertility assistance and a generous parental leave policy, we value our employees’ wellbeing and want to support them along every step of their professional and personal journeys.
