The Role

SoFi is looking for a Staff Data Engineer to lead the design and development of data pipelines and models supporting a new Global Money Movement platform. This product will enable members to send instant, affordable payments across borders using modern technologies—including blockchain-based networks. As a Staff Data Engineer, you’ll play a foundational role in shaping the data architecture that powers everything from financial reporting to real-time decisioning and ML-enabled product intelligence.
You’ll work closely with engineering, product, analytics, data science, and compliance teams to deliver robust, scalable, and secure data systems. Your work will help ensure that SoFi delivers a compliant, performant, and member-first remittance experience on a global scale.
What You’ll Do:
Design and Build: Develop scalable, resilient data models and pipelines to support the ingestion, processing, storage, and retrieval of large-scale financial data, supporting mission-critical analytics and operational workflows.
Architect for Scale: Optimize and scale data infrastructure for performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness using modern cloud platforms and data processing frameworks.
Drive Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional stakeholders—including product, analytics, risk, and compliance—to understand data needs and deliver solutions that enable business decisions, reporting, and customer insights.
Lead with Excellence: Define and implement best practices in data modeling, governance, access control, and documentation. Champion high standards across engineering operations and production systems.
Elevate Data Strategy: Influence data architecture decisions that impact the broader platform roadmap. Identify areas for data innovation and guide long-term investments to advance SoFi’s global payments capabilities.
What You’ll Need:
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field;
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering and analytics technical strategy.
- Proficiency in data engineering tech stack; Snowflake / PostgreSQL / Python / SQL / GitLab / AWS / Airflow/ DBT and others..
- Proficiency in relational database platforms and cloud database platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, or GCP
- Strong in Python and/or another data centric language.
- Thorough knowledge of data modeling, database design, data architecture principles, and data operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capability to simplify complex issues into actionable plans.
Nice to Have:
- Experience working in fintech or with payment systems, particularly cross-border money movement or FX.
- Familiarity with blockchain-based payment networks (e.g., Bitcoin Lightning, stablecoin rails) or third-party settlement providers.
- Exposure to data governance, compliance, and audit frameworks in financial services.
- Knowledge of real-time data streaming technologies and event-driven architectures.
- Experience supporting ML-driven use cases or real-time decision systems within financial products.
