About the job

This position is needed to drive, develop and operate an Istio based service mesh which will manage all service to service communications for Twilio’s services and infrastructure platform. This shared platform is essential to secure, efficient and reliable communications of Twilio’s products. If you are deeply passionate about system to system communications and solving sophisticated infrastructure problems with a service mesh, you are a great fit for our team.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Iteratively and rapidly Design, develop, and operate innovative software for managing an Istio Service Mesh infrastructure at scale
  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Educate and advocate for new technologies in the Twilio engineering organization
  • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers
  • Create, maintain and operate critical systems that securely interconnect key applications

Required:

  • Experience with service mesh platforms such as Istio, Envoy, Linkerd, or Consul
  • Experience with using or developing L4/L7 proxy controllers such as Contour, Nginx, and HA-Proxy
  • Experience with Kubernetes and/or containers.
  • Understand of Kubernetes ingress and egress
  • Experience with tooling surrounding the Kubernetes ecosystem including the various controllers, operators and package managers that are available. CRDs, Operator patterns, Aggregated APIs, RBAC
  • Experience and proficiency in writing sustainable GoLang. Other software experience relevant but not required: Java, Python, Rust, etc
  • Experience architecting Kubernetes aligned observability standard processes via instrumentation, logging and tracing with tools such as Prometheus, alertmanager, Grafana, Jaeger, fluentd, ELK, etc
  • Experience architecting and implementing software development and deployment standard processes using tools such as ArgoCD, Jenkins, Flux, etc
  • Experience developing various level of tests including unit, integration, performance and ongoing operational canary testing
  • Experience with cloud automation and lifecycle management tooling such as Terraform, ansible, chef
  • Experience with AWS and its different products including compute, networking, and storage
  • Written communication skills including how to document and diagram design requirements.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience
  • Computer Science background and education

Desired:

  • Experience implementing secure Multi-tenant software solutions
  • Experience in open source collaboration
  • Experience with virtualization technology
  • Linux internal, distributed systems and OS experience.

Location 

This role will be remote based in the USA.

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:

  • Based in Colorado: $160,080 - $200,100.
  • Based in New York, Washington State or California (outside the San Francisco Bay Area): $169,520 - $211,900.
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $188,320 - $235,400.
  • This role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave. 

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state.
