Why Box needs you:

At Box, we are seeking a talented Senior Backend Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in the development of Box Metadata Extract, a key component that will enable businesses to automate data extraction from documents, improve workflows with intelligent metadata extraction and categorization, and enhance compliance and data management efficiency. At Metadata Extract, we aim to empower our users to gain deeper insights from their content, automate routine tasks to save time and reduce errors, and ultimately build smarter, more scalable workflows.

As part of this team, your mission will be to ensure that the metadata extractor is designed with the best architecture and security standards in mind. Your focus will be on ensuring that the system is flexible enough to guarantee seamless integration of its capabilities into the Box platform, complementing existing tools for secure collaboration, content management, and workflow automation.

The work you do will have an immediate and lasting impact on the productivity of millions of users at some of the most significant enterprises of our time.

What you'll do:

• Lead design and implementation efforts for the components of our app, from the ground up
• Collaborate with partner teams and domain architects on system design and services integration, with a focus on reliability, observability, operability and efficiency
• Collaborate with Box AI team
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to team growth and development
• Strengthen engineering processes, principles, and culture within the team and across Box, by championing a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and blameless retrospection
• Be involved in defining the vision and assembling feature roadmaps

Who you are:

• 6+ years of professional backend software development experience, with a preference for Java.
• Hands-on experience deploying and operating microservices in cloud environments.
• Strong understanding of common algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
• Proven technical expertise, including providing guidance on best practices, coding standards, and addressing complex technical challenges.
• Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and metrics tools to ensure system health and performance.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices, such as setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
• Problem-solving mindset with a willingness to work across various technologies as needed.
• Strong sense of ownership, persistence, and drive, coupled with excellent English communication skills.

Bonus points for:

• • Experience with PHP and JavaScript for server-side development.
  • Basic knowledge of AI/ML concepts, along with programming skills in Python.
