Senior Software Engineer, Behavior Evaluation

About the Role

Our NuroDriver will need to encounter innumerable scenarios successfully to realize the benefits of robotics in everyday life. The mandate of the Behavior Eval team is to build comprehensive simulation-driven test-suites that provide quick, actionable insights to accelerate development across the various components of our ML-first Behavior stack (e.g., prediction, planning, controls). 

As our NuroDriver evolves, it will encounter new situations on the road. You will ensure that our autonomy engineers can test improvements to NuroDriver in simulation before these improvements hit the road. Your test suites will leverage historic experiences from our AV fleet as well as anticipate and fill gaps in possible scenarios our robot might encounter in the future. 

Designing a test-suite that is both comprehensive, as well as capable of providing actionable insights quickly is a core challenge in the AV industry today. If you love solving challenging new problems with a mindset of deriving practical scalable solutions that Nuro can depend on.

About the Work

• Design tools/pipelines to leverage a very large corpus of data collected by our AV fleet for our evaluation system.
• Implement coverage-indicators to characterize driving data collected onroad.
• Implement quality-indicators for onroad driving data.
• Collaborate closely with our infrastructure teams to both utilize their tools / data platforms, as well as contribute to improvements and influence future designs.
• Write robust, high quality software to increase our confidence in our vehicle’s ability to navigate safely on-road.

About You

• Bachelors with 3+ years of industry experience or Masters with 2+ years of industry experience
• Strong programming skills in Python and C++. Familiarity with both languages is required
• Experience designing, implementing, and extending data pipelines and/or infrastructure tools
• Experience with data manipulation, data science, statistics and SQL
• Strong fundamental mathematical and 2D geometric reasoning 
• Strong desire to evaluate behavior performance and validate safety 
• Collaborative attitude and desire to learn about the behavior/autonomy stack

Bonus Points

• Experience working with distributed systems or data storage infrastructure (Big query, Beam, Datastore, Postgres, etc)
• Experience working in robotics/AVs - familiarity with the terminology, approaches, and theory of different parts of the autonomy stack

 

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $167,200 and $250,800/year for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
