Senior Backend Engineer

The Consumer Tribe, a startup within SumUp, builds products that turn transactions into easier, more engaging, and more meaningful interactions while improving consumers' financial lives. You will have a lot of autonomy to build processes from scratch, solve impactful problems, and shape the future of the team. Becoming a part of the Consumer Tribe means working alongside around 30 people across offices in Cologne, Berlin, and London who love taking ownership, working with purpose, and helping consumers thrive.

As a Senior Backend Engineer (Golang), you will be responsible for optimising backend performance for transaction processing, implementing robust security measures, designing scalable architectures, creating user-friendly APIs with clear documentation, and emphasizing code quality through unit testing. We encourage the exploration of new languages and services, empowering our teams to choose the best technology for new projects. Currently, our Tribe is using Go, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, gRPC, Postgres, AWS, and Rest APIs.

This is an office-first position (5x).

 

What you’ll do

• Collaborate with other software developers, QAs, DevOps engineers, designers, product managers and other key stakeholders to design and implement backend services and APIs, clarify problems, outline opportunities, prototype solutions, ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration, and support existing functionalities
• Work in a global context with teams in Europe, the US and Latin America
• Provide comprehensive documentation and high test coverage
• Actively participate in selection of new tools, technologies and processes, code reviews and pair programming with other software engineers
• Help your team deliver business value by taking decisions related to the backend and actively participating in product discussions
• Build capabilities that bring value to millions of users
• Constantly adopt and actualize best practices with the team 

You’ll be great for this role if

• Solid backend experience in Golang 
• Strong experience in software architecture and application design, with a track record of making architectural decisions and a deep understanding of fundamental system architecture and API design (RESTful and event-driven services)
• You feel comfortable working with SQL and NoSQL databases
• You have solid debugging, optimisation and problem-solving skills
• You have experience with CI/CD products such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD
• You love to mentor people and share knowledge 
• You have a passion to write clear, concise and testable code that your team can understand, maintain and improve

Any of the following would be considered a plus

• Good understanding of modern cloud environments - AWS, Prometheus, Grafana, Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• You have experience with event streaming platforms and messaging brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ 
• Experience in the fintech industry
