About the job

We’re looking for a talented people manager with a strong engineering background to lead an engineering team that is focused on building data-intensive, highly-available API and backend services in the domain of historical communication data. This domain has significant value in supporting growth of Twilio’s products as well as expansion into new regions (globally). 

This team will contribute to a major architectural initiative for the new version of Twilio API as well as focus on increasing data quality in order to drive customer satisfaction with the service.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Cultivate a highly collaborative team with emphasis on inclusivity and empowering others
  • Manage employee career development by providing coaching and mentoring to junior engineers while guiding senior contributors to maximize their potential. 
  • Provide continuous performance feedback, collaborate with employees on their objectives and provide a clear path for progression through personal development plans.
  • Own, operate and maintain your team’s services, employing Agile methodologies to continuously deliver value to customers. 
  • Collaborate on roadmaps with Product Managers, Architects and Tech Leads to ensure the team has clear direction and priorities. 
  • Assist in engineering decisions, maintain a high level of engineering quality - including Software Development Lifecycle and service Resilience.
  • Foster leadership throughout the organization to groom the next generation of leaders.

Required:

6+ years of software engineering experience including 2+ years of experience in a management role

  • Demonstrated experience leading inclusive teams, mentoring junior engineers, and teaching proven practices that help teams grow.
  • Communication skills that demonstrate empathy and compassion to build trust, resolve conflicts, and provide feedback to your team. 
  • Ability to supervise the design, implementation and operation of sophisticated components and large-scale systems using Java-based technologies and frameworks, such as: Spring, Webflux, Kafka, etc.
  • Good understanding of cloud technologies and managed services within AWS
  • Experience with containerization tools like Docker, Kubernetes
  • Good knowledge of SQL, proper understanding of key concepts in classic Database management systems (e.g. MySQL, MSSQL, OracleDB) and modern elastic storages (e.g. S3, DynamoDB).
  • Ability to manage numerous projects, teams, and schedules in a rapid-growth environment, to coordinate successful/timely releases and achieve quality objectives

Desired:

  • Experience with Python, Javascript/HTML/CSS, Terraform, Spark

 

Location 

This role will be remote, and based in the West region, USA.

Approximately 5-10% travel is anticipated.

*Please note this role is open to candidates outside of Colorado, California, New York, and Washington. The information below is provided for candidates hired in those locations only.

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:

  • Based in Colorado: $160,000 - $200,000
  • Based in New York, Washington State or California (outside the San Francisco Bay Area): $169,500 - $211,900.
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $188,300 - $235,400.
  • This role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave. 

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state.
