Who we are

Tractable is an Artificial Intelligence company bringing the speed and insight of Applied AI to visual assessment. Trained on millions of data points, our AI-powered solutions connect everyone involved in insurance, repairs, and sales of homes and cars – helping people work faster and smarter, while reducing friction and waste.

Founded in 2014, Tractable is now the AI tool of choice for world-leading insurance and automotive companies. Our solutions unlock the potential of Applied AI to transform the whole recovery ecosystem, from assessing damage and accelerating claims and repairs to recycling parts. They help make response to recovery up to ten times faster – even after full-scale disasters like floods and hurricanes.

Tractable has a world-class culture, backed up by our team, making us a global employer of choice!

We're a diverse team, uniting individuals of over 40 different nationalities and from varied backgrounds, with machine learning researchers and motor engineers collaborating together on a daily basis. We empower each team member to have tangible impact and grow their own scope by intentionally building a culture centred around collaboration, transparency, autonomy and continuous learning.

The Analytics team at Tractable supports some of our most critical products and processes, both internally and externally. The team is responsible for designing, building and evolving our core data models which drive everything from customer-facing reporting (which the team also owns) to billing to AI R&D. The vision of the team is to enable Tractable and its customers to make every decision of maximal value, and in a timely, confident, targeted manner.

The Analytics team belongs to a larger group within Engineering - Dev Foundations - which is largely focused on building tools and services for our internal customers within Tractable: researchers, product engineers, ops specialists, etc. We have 4 teams in Dev Foundations tackling different aspects of the space: Infrastructure & Security, Analytics, QA and Data & ML Ops. As the lead of the Analytics team you will primarily be collaborating with peer teams within Engineering, with our Product PMs and with Research to provide the timely, accurate, reliable data crucial for rapid, iterative product development.

What you will do

You will help mature our Analytics capability to a world-class state. You will influence the scope and technical direction as well as champion best practices within the team. You have a relentless focus on user experience (Tractable’s customers, researchers, data scientists, product engineers, customer success, GTM) and you care deeply about what your team is building to make sure it will have the biggest impact on your users. You will be a strong mentor, nurturing an encouraging and supportive environment to grow the team at pace. You will deeply embed data and analytical capability within the fabric of the organisation.

You will:

  • Gain an intimate understanding of Tractable’s products and be opinionated on how we best model its entities within intuitive, scalable data models
  • Lead a team of Analysts with a range of experience, coaching and mentoring them on their path to analytical excellence
  • Work with Product and Engineering leaders to evolve our customer-facing analytics to more seamlessly integrate with our products
  • Work with Research and Engineering to enable rapid, automated ML model evolution
  • Work with other internal teams to drive greater clarity & pace of action through relevant data and analytics (e.g. granular cost attribution of systems & infrastructure to teams)
  • Maintain a high level of security and governance of our analytical data & systems
  • Champion cost-efficiency and performance of data pipelines
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive catalogue of our datasets, enabling all of Tractable to discover and understand our data independently
  • Continue to drive a cultural evolution towards data self-service, enablement and independence
  • Provide clarity of direction and priority for your team, effectively managing conflicting priorities, technical debt and tactical/strategic deliveries

Tech Stack

We rely heavily on the following tools and technologies, but we are likely to explore new technologies / frameworks where there is a compelling use-case. Nothing is viewed as ‘solved’. You don't need to have prior experience in all of them, and we actively encourage diverse views on what the best tools for the job are. We’re just keen to know that you're willing to break things, fix things, learn fast and help build a great team that is capable of building a platform that delights our internal and external customers.

  • Data stack: AWS MSK, AWS Lambda, AWS Redshift, dbt, Airflow, Airbyte, AWS Glue, Streamlit, AWS Quicksight, Tableau
  • Databases: Postgres / RDS, Redis, DynamoDB
  • Languages: Python, SQL (Redshift, Postgres)
  • IAC & CI/CD: Terraform, CDK, Docker, Harness

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have experience with all of the tools listed above. We strongly believe that a strong culture match and rapid growth potential/appetite is much more important than what you happen to currently know or have experienced.

What you need to be successful

You are a strong Analytics Lead who is passionate about creating clarity with data. You have a solid background in core software engineering principles and applying rigorous processes to the development and management of data products. A few things we are particularly interested in seeing from you:

  • Exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated ability to distil clarity and precise action from complex and noisy situations
  • An ability to independently catalyse both process and technical change in a complex, highly cross-functional environment
  • 5+ years of technical experience in data modelling and insight design
  • Deep experience building, managing and maintaining robust data pipelines, ideally using dbt
  • Deep experience with modern data infrastructure, in particular understanding how to optimally leverage distributed compute & storage platforms like Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake etc. for high performance, cost-effective analytics
  • Experience managing externally facing dashboards, analytics or other data integrations
  • A robust, practical approach to data governance
  • A product & customer focussed perspective to the development of data products
  • Experience leading, mentoring and rapidly growing  junior colleagues
  • Worked with Python in a professional environment for 2+ years
  • A strong advocate of applying solid software engineering principles to the development of data products, with broad experience in git, CI/CD, data quality assurance and data reliability
  • Experience deploying and managing infrastructure-as-code, preferably via Terraform or AWS CDK
  • Have introduced or grown genuine self-service data capabilities within an organisation
  • Familiarity with the ML lifecycle (particularly computer vision) and how data & analytics can drive faster, more focussed innovation for researchers and applied scientists
