By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It’s the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.

WHY BOX NEEDS YOU

Box is the Content Cloud — we help organizations securely manage content and power new workflows with AI. Our Users, Groups, Insights, Reports, and Billing teams build the critical services that keep Box running at enterprise scale. As we expand Box AI, we’re investing in accurate, scalable consumption-based billing and the data services that power insights for our customers and our business.

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to lead the architecture and evolution of these high-scale systems. You’ll spend about 60% of your time driving system design across multiple teams and 40% coding, reviewing, and improving operations. You’ll mentor engineers, partner across Product, Finance, and Data, and shape the future of Box AI billing and analytics.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead end-to-end architecture for services across users, groups, insights, reports, and consumption-based billing.

  • Design and validate scalable, reliable systems for high-volume data ingestion, processing, and reporting.

  • Implement backend services and APIs; review code and raise engineering quality across teams.

  • Drive technical roadmaps, design docs, and RFCs; align stakeholders across Product, Finance, and Data.

  • Improve observability, on-call health, and incident response; champion SLOs and cost efficiency.

  • Mentor engineers at multiple levels; grow design skills and delivery velocity across three teams across the globe.

  • Partner with data teams to evolve GCP/BigQuery pipelines and schemas for analytics and billing.

  • Balance near-term delivery with longer-term platform investments and simplification.

  • Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arrise.

WHO YOU ARE

We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience, including 3+ years designing large-scale distributed systems.

  • Proven system design leadership: you’ve owned complex architectures end-to-end and influenced multiple teams.

  • Experience with usage metering, billing, or high-volume data pipelines; strong focus on accuracy and performance.

  • Proficiency in at least one major backend language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, C#) and familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP and/or AWS).

  • Hands-on experience with data warehousing or analytics platforms (e.g., BigQuery) is a strong plus.

  • Excellence in communication: clear design docs, pragmatic tradeoffs, and effective cross-functional collaboration.

  • Growth mindset and openness to learning new technologies and domains.

  • Nice to have: Experience mentoring engineers across geographies; operating services in on-call rotations.
