We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer to join Data Services within the Platform organization. Data Services comprises multiple teams that manage data ingestion, modeling and distribution, as well as the creation of unique data products backed by VTS’ highly valued, first-party data sets. While the Data Platform is built to be secure, reliable and scalable, it’s also designed to allow for fast time to insight. You will be a key member of the centralized data organization of a mid-sized, growth stage technology company where the opportunity for business-wide impact is huge!

To thrive in this role you:

  • Are a data engineering lead with extensive experience building data platforms and products
  • Are able to set technical direction for multiple teams and have a proven ability to build consensus among multiple team leads
  • Have experience evolving complex systems, methodically, and following best practices, towards a desired future state
  • Are technology agnostic and can quickly orient to a new codebase or tool, but also prize learning about emergent technologies and the problems they might solve
  • Prioritize mentoring junior and senior engineers alike. You’re comfortable pairing, as well as providing feedback through one-on-ones or in written response to technical proposals and pull requests
  • Have a track record building data products including BI tools, data APIs, data visualization, predictive analytics / ML, etc. and can help establish best practices across the broader PED organization
  • Have strong programming skills in one or more languages like Python, Scala, or Ruby
  • Are proficient in SQL and have deep experience data modeling as well as with the organization and management of data in warehouses (e.g. Snowflake), data lakes, or with open table formats
  • Have designed, built and maintained data pipelines for both bulk and streaming use cases
  • Have experience with orchestration tools like Airflow, data processing technologies like Spark, as well as streaming solutions (e.g., Kafka, Flink)
  • Are comfortable building infrastructure-as-code with tools like Terraform and are familiar with a cloud provider like AWS

What you can expect:

  • Building: Build robust and scalable data ingestion, transformation, and distribution solutions across various sources and systems.
  • Designing: By understanding business needs, users’ goals and technical approaches, you set technical vision and define the architecture for the Data Services platform. You will draw input and ideas from squad-level technical leads as well as product partners. 
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers from multiple teams in Data Services as well as cross-functionally with product managers and data analysts and scientists to integrate advanced data-driven features into our software products.
  • Mentoring: Introduce new technologies and patterns, and champion best practices that help uplevel the engineers on the team while delivering data that is trustworthy, useful and secure. 
  • Continuous improvement: Drive continuous improvement in our data engineering practices, adopting the latest technologies and methodologies to keep our data infrastructure at the forefront of the industry.
