Discord's Infrastructure teams build the systems that allow many millions of users from all around the world to talk and have fun in real-time – as well as the tools that power our engineering teams.

This team is responsible for the live service from audio/video to messaging to the underlying primitives like traffic and storage. Additionally, this organization is responsible for our internal developer experience – how do engineers write and ship code always and at high quality.

Discord is looking for a technical, hands-on, and mission-driven Senior Director of Engineering to lead our Infrastructure organization to help us scale to the next level. You will report to our VP of Core Technology and have leadership and influence on the evolution of Discord's overall Engineering organization.

What you'll be doing

Build and lead multiple teams of engaged directors, managers, and engineers by hiring, coaching, and optimizing for impact
Oversee the vision and roadmap for the Infrastructure organization by working with your leads, teams, and executive partners across the company

Get hands-on when needed (or when you want!) to help unblock decisions, understand tradeoffs, and have some fun

Manage processes and use your technical expertise to improve the team and ensure your team achieves extraordinary results
Work with the rest of leadership to improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy

Who are you

You have 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer and 5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
You have 5+ years of experience managing other Managers, running a complete organization with 5+ managers and 25+ engineers
You enjoy coming up with pragmatic solutions to concrete problems using first principles thinking
You've worked with complex distributed systems deployed at scale where uptime is crucial – four 9s or better
You understand durability and know how to run an infrastructure where users rely on your team’s work
You are passionate about coaching and leading other engineers, but secretly love getting elbow deep in systems when the opportunities arise
Experience working with modern infrastructure technologies and vendors (Kubernetes, Terraform, Envoy, Datadog, Cloudflare, etc)
Experience with modern cloud platforms like Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services
You are based in the San Francisco Bay Area and willing to work part of the time (1-2 days a week) out of our Potrero Hill office

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $342,000 to $376,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.
