Senior Backup Engineer

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain enterprise backup and recovery infrastructure using Commvault and Veritas NetBackup technologies 
• Develop and execute comprehensive backup strategies for diverse environments including physical servers, virtual machines, databases, cloud workloads, and applications 
• Establish backup policies, retention schedules, and compliance requirements aligned with business needs and regulatory standards 
• Monitor backup operations and proactively resolve backup failures and performance issues 
• Regularly test restore operations to validate recoverability and refine recovery time objectives (RTOs) 
• Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and implementation as it relates to backup systems 
• Implement and maintain backup security protocols to protect againstransomware and other threats 
• Optimize backup infrastructure for efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness 
• Evaluate new backup technologies and features, providing recommendations for platform upgrades and enhancements 
• Create and maintain documentation for backup architecture, policies, and operational procedures 
• Develop automation solutions to streamline backup operations and reporting 
• Mentor junior backup engineers and provide technical guidance on complex backup scenarios 
• Collaborate with infrastructure, application, and security teams to ensure comprehensive data protection 
• Participate in on-call rotation for critical backup and recovery incidents 

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field 
• 7+ years of experience in backup and recovery roles, with at least 4 years focused on enterprise environments 
• Extensive hands-on experience with Commvault Backup & Recovery solutions 
• Goodexpertise with Veritas NetBackup administration and architecture 
• Advanced knowledge of backup methodologies, including full, incremental, synthetic, deduplicated, and cloud-based backups 
• Current certifications in Commvault (CVCP/CVCE) and/or Veritas NetBackup (VCS/VCSP) 
• Experience backing up diverse workloads including VMware/Hyper-V, OpenStack, major databases (SQL, Oracle, etc.), and messaging platforms 
• Strong understanding of storage technologies that interface with backup systems 
• Experience with disaster recovery planning and implementation 
• Knowledge of compliance requirements related to data retention and protection 
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities 

Additional Skills (Nice to have)

• Experience with additional backup solutions 
• Proficiency in scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, etc.) 
• Knowledge of cloud backup technologies and services 
• Understanding of tape library technologies and operations 
• Experience with backup implementations in large, distributed environments 
• Familiarity with containerized application backup strategies 
• Knowledge of data archiving solutions and strategies 
• Understanding of data classification and its impact on backup policies 
• ITIL knowledge and experience with incident and change processes 
• Experience with backup security and ransomware protection strategies 
• Background in storage engineering or administration 
• Knowledge of data governance frameworks and regulations
