So, from the moment you begin your journey with Xero, we will constantly strive to ensure you’ll feel welcome and supported to do the best work of your life.

We are hiring several Lead Engineers within our Product Practice and Connected Workplaces groups to help us deliver on our biggest ambitions while achieving the highest standards of engineering excellence.

Xero Practice Manager
XPM is a very successful tool used by Accounting Practices around the world to manage their day to day operations. It has stood the test of time and we now need to ensure it is fit for the next chapter of our customers’ success journey. As a Lead Engineer in XPM, you will help define and deliver a technical strategy to evolve XPM into a powerful, modern set of services and customer experiences that enable integration with our other Accounting Practice tools.

Practice - Unified Experience
In Practice we are focusing on building a unified experience for our Accountant & Bookkeeper customers, building on top of our existing Practice tools by modernising, consolidating and evolving our services as well as strengthening our foundations and creating new functionality. As a Lead Engineer in this space you will help define technical strategy and roadmap for achieving the goal of establishing a single source of truth and fuelling cohesive and seamless user experiences. You will also be advocating for best practices, quality-first approach and proactive maintenance of the health of our systems.

Practice - Developer Experience
The Developer Experience team is focusing on enabling the best of class developer experience for all Engineers across Practice. You will be deeply involved in connecting with our customers (the Engineers) to better understand their development experience and to find opportunities to enhance tooling, innovate on approaches, and advocate for best practices, guidelines and standards as well as helping provide a connection across the entire portfolio to create a thriving engineering community and a robust forum for knowledge sharing.

Expenses is a mature product which over the past 2 years has managed to double its subscriber base, over the next 3 years we will be concentrating on ensuring we have a highly maintainable product utilising best practice, up to date technology, while delivering new experiences within the domain driven XeroMe employee ecosystem. Within expenses you will need to take your problem solving abilities to the next level, not only being able to deeply understand the product but also using data and other insights to find problems worth solving. You will think holistically about the product, its functional and non-functional requirements and our journey towards excellent domain driven engineering.

The Payroll product strives to make it simple for small businesses everywhere, to pay their people correctly and with confidence.  We take the complexity out of payroll for employers to save them time and ensure their employees are paid correctly. Work with your cross-functional team to deliver beautiful software that is valuable to our customers, and will lead the solution design for the work coming into your team. You'll be a guiding light and help your team to balance delivery and engineering excellence (quality, performance, security, devops, tech modernisation).

What you'll be doing:

  • As a Lead Engineer, you will be working as a key part of one of our product teams.
  • It is a hands on, on the tools role and you’ll be the focal point where technical decisions meet strategic thinking.
  • Support the team by providing guidance and coaching around what great delivery, testing and performance practices look like.
  • This role will also enable you to grow into a principal engineer or architecture role, as you demonstrate the ability to influence the organisation around you towards engineering excellence.

While we don’t require you to have worked with our tech stack previously, what is important is you are happy to learn and work with it. Generally, if a team is spinning up a new code base it may look like the following:

  • Utilising a variety of AWS services
  • Running in a Docker container, orchestrated by Kubernetes
  • Accessed by SPA written in React with TypeScript
