About the job
At Scaleway, we provide a large scope of cloud products to our customers. From dedicated servers to virtual machines, and baremetal cloud servers, storage solutions and many others. Hardware Engineering is a rapidly growing department at the heart of Scaleway’s infrastructure, offering a vast array of servers to our customers and internal teams. The Hardware Engineering department is responsible for most of the hardware activities of the company; from R&D and qualification to prototyping and rack level design, from tool development to hardware support, from designing to selection and documentation.
The Hardware Tech Lead interacts with the Product, Engineering, and Operations teams, as well as liaising with the different manufacturers.
Our objective is to provide our customers with the best products and solutions and ensure that they are built with the most adequate and reliable hardware. This implies that we must always be a few steps ahead so we can offer best-of-breed solutions, and bring them to market. Hence, we are always looking at next generation platforms and opportunities for our products.
Being part of a team reporting to the VP Hardware Engineering, your role will be to assess the systems and components from different manufacturers, test server hardware solutions, interpret and document results and educate internal teams on hardware.
Your input will be essential to validate the hardware assets ahead of the production phases in order to finalize design, confirm serviceability, define service levels, and industrialize the production of new offers.
Responsibilities
- Be the point of contact and the Hardware Engineering team reference for the other teams for any hardware related question,
- Manage internal projects related to hardware in coordination with the VP Hardware Engineering,
- Technology watch looking for any improvement with regards to Hardware and Firmware topics,
- Liaise with the different manufacturers for technical issues, improvements requests,
- Evaluate and validate the possible HW new solutions being tested for new Scaleway products,
- Interact with the HW R&D and HW Architect to refine the configurations of the possible HW solutions,
- Close relationship with the HW R&D and HW Architect,
- Help the HW Support team with diagnosis of complex situation,
- Act as a consultant for the other teams of the Operations organization (Supply Chain, Manufacturing, …)
- Help train all the teams on how hardware functions.
Minimum qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of the computer/server hardware from the various OEM and ODM,
- Good knowledge of Linux-based environments and general system administration (PXE, grub, kernel, …),
- Knowledge of the cloud ecosystem and products,
- Creativity and strong self-motivation,
- Focus on industrialization and processes,
- Project management,
- Structured thinking, prioritizing, and long-term planning skills,
- Communication/summarizing/documentation skills: being able to summarize all kinds of information in an efficient and synthetic manner as well as popularization targeting non-technical teams within Scaleway,
- Full professional English proficiency.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of the network hardware,
- Knowledge of standard associations (JEDEC, IEEE),
- Knowledge of OpenHardware community, OCP,
- Understanding of the benchmarking process,
- Knowledge of the power & cooling constraints at the rack and datacenter level,
- Experience in the world of hardware at scale,
- Understanding of µarch, technological standards.

Based in our offices in Paris or Lille (France), partial remote is possible.
